Over the centuries, since the reforms which Solon introduced to ancient Athens in 599 B.C., there have been many influential persons and groupings which have sought to change this state of affairs. The American Revolution is one of the outstanding examples of such efforts. One of the most notable efforts is that of Germany’s Wilhelm von Humboldt, who proposed a system of universal education intended to transform the entire adult population into a qualified elite. Humboldt’s reforms were excellent for that purpose, and are a model of what U.S. public education should be transformed to become today. His educational system worked, but his kind of classical and scientific education was never permitted to reach more than an elite minority of Germany’s youth. Mankind will not enter the long-awaited Age of Reason, in which true democratic republics exist, until the overwhelming majority of the adult population is educated and motivated to constitute the national elite.
